The mountainous region of Valencia is a perfect place to spend time enjoying a totally unique holiday.Wilderness mixed with Mediterranean culture makes for the perfect mix to enjoy a holiday which include some truly beautiful parts of Valencia. Wild herbs, pine trees and rocky mountains make a great backdrop to your trip.
Great Food, Exercise, Culture, Relaxation – these are the four key elements of a new tour from boutique operator The Spanish Thyme Traveller. The Iberos Tour takes you to the interior of Valencia – where you will see beautiful countryside, the medieval city of Xativa (original home of the Borgias), independent wineries, and some unique archaeological remains dating back over 2500 years.
There are four types of walking experience in Valencia and on this is the tour you will experience them all:
1) The vineyard area of Fontanares – including a visit and tasting at a small family run winery
2) Walking through the canyons and hills of Valencia, under the partial shade pine, olive and carob trees
3) The open plains of Valencia – an ideal place to spot a variety of birds especially birds of prey (e.g. Peregrine Falcons, Booted, Short toed, Golden and Bonelli’s Eagles) and all in the spectacular backdrop of Spanish Mediterranean mountain countryside. Plus a hike into the mountains.
4) A walking tour of the medieval city of Xativa with a specialist local guide who will reveal the city’s secrets.
Each walk is between two and five hours, and although technically not demanding it is recommended that you are a regular walker and that you have a good basic fitness. The paths can be rough under foot so walking boots are recommended.
This tour is a combination of food, exercise, relaxation and cultural exploration with the chance to indulge in the local gastronomic delights in a beautiful part of Spain. You’ll get to know an area of Spain that hasn’t had the “Brits abroad” treatment; you won’t fall over tourists and cheap souvenirs; you’ll hear mainly Spanish, not English, spoken; you’ll eat the food the locals enjoy; and you’ll stay in independent hotels which being small, offer a friendly welcome with genuine Spanish hospitality.
The Spanish Thyme Traveller is run by the enthusiastic husband and wife team Patrick (British) and Julia (Spanish) who have lived and worked in Xativa, Spain for the last 20 years. Their passion is Spain and its lifestyle. They have travelled extensively throughout Spain, discovering off the beaten track villages, regional food, and all types of wine. Their local knowledge of Valencia and the surrounding areas is superb; an accumulation of years of living, walking, eating and visiting in the region. Together they have created a really fun tour that is genuinely Spanish and allows you to meet and get to know the locals.
