Club Torrevieja’s Driver Awareness Programme

IT’S SUMMER. It’s Hot! It’s either all the windows down or air conditioning on at full blast in the car. It’s also opportunist time for those who make a living from easy pickings from cars whose doors are left unlocked, the windows left down, mobile phones and Sat Navs left in the car or even keys to your house left in plan view, offering an enticement to any thief! Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars have been operating their Driver Awareness programme for a number of years and hope that these simple points may save you time, money and inconvenience this summer. Follow these simple, common sense, words of advice and don’t become a victim this summer.

Lock your doors and boot when driving or leaving your car unattended
Don’t leave handbags, cameras or shopping in the front or back seats within view
Put all valuables and shopping in the boot
Never leave ignition keys in the car at petrol stations or to run into a shop
Never leave the engine running and then exit the car
At night, park your car under a street light or in a locked garage
When you park in a car park, try to choose one with an attendant, or/and one that is well lit and covered by CCTV
Never leave behind your mobile phone or Sat Nav in the car. Always take it with you.
Only open windows half way if someone asks you to open the window, to stop them reaching inside the car
Do not keep your car documents in the glove box. It’s the first place that thieves will look. Have your documents copied and Notarized and carry these in the car instead.
At home, always make sure your car keys are kept out of sight, such as in a discreet cupboard or drawer. Somewhere that a thief shall not find them easily.
On a long journey, make sure someone at your destination knows the route you are taking, that they are aware of the time when you expect to leave and when you are expected to arrive at your destination
Try to avoid driving or parking on badly lit or quiet roads
Never, leave cash, credit cards, mobile phones, vehicle documents or other valuables in the vehicle. If this is unavoidable, make sure they are well hidden before you begin your journey – thieves often watch you parking.
At motorway service stations, park your car where you can keep an eye on it from the cafe
If detachable, always take the radio faceplate with you
If using a remote wireless, central locking system, always double check that the doors have locked by trying one of them before leaving your car unattended.
Report all thefts or lost items to the Police.

And please remember; never leave pets, children or the elderly sitting in a car for any length of time as this could lead to heat stroke or even death!
