Anglican Chaplaincy of St Peter and St Paul

Welcome to the Anglican Chaplaincy of St Peter & St Paul, Torrevieja on the South Costa Blanca, Spain

The Chaplaincy of St Peter and St Paul, Torrevieja is part of the Anglican ‘Diocese in Europe’. The ‘Diocese in Europe’ celebrated its 30th Anniversary in July 2010. All the autonomous regions of Spain form part of the Anglican Archdeaconry of Gibraltar.

There has been an Anglican Church presence in this area for many years. On the Costa Blanca, the Church of England initially was based north of Alicante and by 1986 six Church Centres had been formed. The development to the south was somewhat slower. Places of worship were established at La Siesta, Campoverde and Mil Palmeras, in the Torrevieja area.

The services then were covered by Non Stipendiary Ministers (NSM) and Lay Ministers (Readers and Assistants). Through the efforts of Geoffrey Wakeham, who having been a Reader (Lay Minister) previously, became the Priest-in-Charge, after his Ordination in Gibraltar. He, along with the Church Council, developed further centres at La Marina, Los Balcones, Lago Jardin, and La Manga. Geoffrey continued in his role until retirement in 2001.

In October 2000 the Chaplaincy of St Peter and St Paul was inaugurated and the first paid part-time Chaplain instituted – the Reverend Robin Johnson – who remained in post for three years.

In 2003, due to the continuing increase in people attending our services, our first full-time Chaplain, the Revd. Colin McCormack was appointed.

In November 2008, after serving the Chaplaincy faithfully for over four years, Father Colin decided it was time to move on and resigned his position on 30th November. The Revd Christopher Scargill was appointed Chaplain in September 2009. Father Chris returned to UK to further his Ministry in August 2014. The Chaplaincy has now entered into an interregnum phase and is actively seeking to fill the position of Chaplain.

The Chaplaincy now extends from just south of Alicante airport right down the coast to La Manga near Cartagena.

Additionally for more information on the workings of the Chaplaincy – with the location of the various Church Centres – and other planned activities and events – can be found on their updated website

You can also follow them on their Facebook page.

The Chaplaincy extends a very warm and friendly welcome to all denominations who live in or are visiting our area and our Church Centres
