Holiday Options in Spain
Holidays in Spain
*
- Spain has for years been one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe with over 50 million visitors to the country every year. This page breaks down the different choices of destination in Spain and gives some background to the most popular locations for holidaymakers.
Barcelona
*
- The 4th most visited city in Europe, Barcelona boasts some of the world’s most celebrated architecture including such famous buildings as The Arc de Triomf, Torre Agbar and Barcelona Cathedral. Also boasting Europe’s largest football stadium (the Nou Camp) and a plethora of options for night-time entertainment, the city draws football fanatics, architecture enthusiasts and party animals alike. Culture buffs also have plenty to keep them interested with world renowned opera, concert halls and museums
Madrid
*
- Madrid is Spain’s capital city and largest financial centre. Most famous for bullfighting and home to Las Ventas, the largest bullring in Europe, the city annually attracts millions of people. Bullfighting season runs from March to October with events run every Sunday and most public holidays. For those less interested in bulls Madrid is well known for its nightlife with areas like Malasaña (the must visit area for alternative music fans. As with Barcelona (and the rest of Spain) football is a massively popular pastime and the city features two of the country’s biggest teams, Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid.
Ibiza
*
- Europe’s hub for dance culture and home to world famous clubs such as Pacha and Cafe del Mar, Ibiza is synonymous with young holiday makers out to party. Most of the attractions in Ibiza are centred on the night-life with hundreds of bars and clubs to choose from. Morning after recovery can be sought by basking in the sun on one of dozens of beaches or outdoor cafes. Despite being a party-centric holiday destination Ibiza still holds many places of historical significance. World heritage sites such as the God’s Finger hold great interest and wonderful photo opportunities.
Bilbao
*
- Bilbao has undergone major regeneration in recent years and has become one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations. This due in part to the construction of the Guggenheim Museum, designed by respected architect Frank Gehry. This helped the city gain numerous new local attractions, brought in more business to the area and its popularity resulted in the construction of 8 new hotels since its inauguration. There’s also the Maritime Museum, the Fine Arts Museum and for fans of Basque architecture the Casco ViejoÂ
Canary Islands
*
- Situated just off the Northern coast of Africa (and only 100km from the Sahara Desert) the Canary Islands form an archipelago created by volcanoes. Gran Canaria is the only one to still contain any volcanoes that are still listed as “active” but none have had any recent activity. The islands have quite a different climate depending on their distance from the African coast but all of them benefit from sunny conditions almost all year round. This is probably the reason why almost 12 million people every year chose to embark upon Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote or Tenerife holidays.
