City of Running
One of Valencia’s many claims to fame is that as “Ciudad del Running”, the City of Running. There are many reasons for that, of course, apart from the efforts of the authorities and the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation to promote the healthy pursuit. There is the great weather, the flat terrain, the promenades and, uniquely the dry riverbed that runs for 5 kms right through the city centre. Additionally, the absence of cars from these routes makes the city very “do-able” in a way that Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao would not be. This means that both competitive running and fun running are very popular pursuits in the city centre.
The upshot of all this is the number of official organised and marshalled events – no fewer than 35 in 2015! There is everything from marathons to 5kms, from family runs to night runs. What makes so many of them especially attractive is that they are not on some airport runway or through miles upon miles of industrial estates but rather right through the city with plenty of supporters and always something interesting to see. You can get full details on the Valencia Ciudad del Running website There is even a special information number for runners, 96 394 0200
It is invidious to name names but a couple of events that should be spotlighted are the Valencia Triatlón on 5th/6th September and the 25th Maratón Valencia Trinidad Alfonso on 15th November this year. Trinidad Alfonso was the mother of the founder of Mercadona and her foundation does much to promote a healthy lifestyle and a respect for one’s family and roots.
If you are coming to Valencia and need accommodation, I recommend Globexs for quality apartments throughout the city. If you speak to Antonio at Globexs you will find they have their very own athlete. See him above in action at the Gandia Triathlon recently.
