Kandombe and mother
Kandombe, the bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci) born in BIOPARC two years ago has been moved to Beauval zoo in France with the intention of him mating. The species is in imminent risk of extinction and it is believed there are only between 75 and 140 animals in the wild and these are spread in four separate locations. It is therefore vital that the species survives and breeds in captivity. There are three females in the French zoo and it is hoped that Kandombe who is reaching sexual maturity will mate there.
Kandombe is himself the result of a successful mating programme between a 4 year old male and 5 year old female.
