Some 70Km south of Córdoba at 620m above sea level, Zuheros has its roots deep in history. Main attractions are the Church of the sixteenth century, the ArchaeologicalMuseum, theMuseum of Popular Arts and Customs and The Bat Cave.

The first major castle was constructed at the end of the IX century by the soldiers of Banu Himsi on what was known as “sujaira” (Moorish for rock), it is from this word that Zuheros and the hotel derive their names. The population today is 830.

Tucked into the side of the limestone cliffs with its narrow, twisting, whitewashed   streets Zuheros offers the visitor spectacular views over the surrounding countryside and is the gateway to theSierraSubbéticaNaturalParkwith its fine walking. This track was the former railway line that linked Puente Genil andLinares. Abandoned in 1984, it has been converted into a walking/cycling/horse riding route that links Lucena, Cabra, Doña Mencía, Zuheros and Luque and covers 58Km as it passes through the Subbética. There remain various buildings related to the railway including the old stations of Doña Mencía and Luque (now restaurants) and several crossing controls. To the east of Luque the track passes near to the Natural Reserve of the Laguna del Salobral, a natural salt lake that hosts flocks of flamingo in spring. It dries out completely in summer. It continues to Jaén where it is known as the Vía Verde del Aceite.

Zuheros is situated in the extreme north of the Natural Park, a protected area since 1988. It covers 31,569 hectares and includes the villages of Cabra, Carcabuey, Doña Mencía, Iznájar, Luque, Priego de Córdoba, Rute and Zuheros.

The most outstanding features are the formations caused by the erosion of the limestone by water, air and time. This type of landscape is known as Karst. The relief is very abrupt and reaches

1568m above sea level at the summit of La Tiñosanear Priego de Córdoba. The vegetation is typically Mediterranean with rock rose, Jerusalem sage, holm oak, gall oak etc.

Springtime is the best time to appreciate the great abundance of flowers including iris, narcissus, peony, orchid etc.

Regarding the fauna, the presence of wild boar, mountain cat, fox and hedgehog can be noted. It is also home to the Mediterranean Mountain Shrew which lives here in the most southerly part ofEurope.

Over 50 different varieties of birds have been spotted here, including golden oriole, Dartford warbler, blue rock thrush, Sardinian warbler, black wheat ear, golden eagle, peregrine falcon (which is incidentally the emblem of the Park). There are also large colonies of chough and griffon vulture.

Zuheros is ideally suited to explore the unique landscape of the Sierras Subbéticas.

Located in the “Casa Blanca”, 700 m from Zuheros to Baena towards the road CO-6209, we can see a pictorial, sculptural and literary sample of the artist.

Time table: Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 11:00 h to 14:00 h.

The tourist office is in the archaeological museum and the time table is the same.
