CERVANTES DE CERA

“DON QUIXOTE” AND ITS INTERPRETATION.

A COMPARISSON BETWEEN “DON QUIXOTE” AND “HAMLET” – SHAKESPEARE AND CERVANTES.

Cervantes is considered as the best novelist in history so far today (and as the inventor of the modern novel).
Shakespeare is considered as the best playwright in history so far today.

But why are they so relevant?

Why two authors of the same historical period (who died four hundred years ago) have never been surpassed by any other authors?

Well, both of them had a great knowledge of the classics and also they had a great knowledge of the human soul.
They represent the transition from the Renaissance to the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries (the modern era). When Cervantes died in 1616 Spain was still the main country in the whole world, although soon its decline would begin (as always has happened with all empires along history).

Let´s make a comparison between “Don Quixote” and “Hamlet” now, let´s see some points:
– There is a play inside a play in both works
– The topic of revenge is treated differently ; thus Don Quixote is very noble, and although he is a very brave man and very impulsive and even violent against injustice, we can observe that he is a peace-loving person when he is calm too. Thus for example when Sancho asks Don Quixote to avenge him after being tossed in the inn (when people mocked at Sancho) Don Quixote tells him to forget it and leave justice to God.
– Hamlet is a desperate character, he does not find comfort in anything. Don Quixote is always faithful and eager to run adventures and to live life to the fullest. (Although when Sancho calls him “The Knight of the Soul Countenance” Don Quixote laughs loudly and accepts that it is true).

How can we interpret “Don Quixote”?

Well, the book is so complex that it can have many readings, from a mere superficial reading to a deeper one. And furthermore the book is as a prism with many faces where you can choose your own interpretation. Thus you can see it merely as a funny book full of humor (that was the interpretation done by contemporary audiences of Cervantes, during Cervantes life) and it is ok. But also you can see it as a collection of Spanish proverbs, poems and stories, which is fine too (you find there the most refined and distinguished pages of the Spanish culture) . Also you can consider it as a critique of the world, or maybe as the story of a true hero.

In my opinion Don Quixote symbolizes the honest, brave and noble man who is treated as a haggard man and as a madman in a world dominated by corruption and disenchantment. Thus, in fact what Don Quixote does is to denounce us and our madness. Our madness consists basically in accepting injustice and corruption as normal features in our society nowadays. Thus Don Quixote denounces our madness when we see how the world is, we accept it as it is and even we try to adapt to it, and yet we consider ourselves sane people and Don Quixote an insane person.

I guess that if Don Quixote came to our world nowadays he would have a lot of work to do, when middle classes are disappearing in Europe (and we are threatened with the disappearance of the welfare state and also with the disappearance of social achievements), and when in the whole world there is a widening gap between very few rich and a vast majority of poor.

DON QUIJOTE 3 (1)

“DON QUIJOTE” Y SU INTERPRETACIÓN. UNA COMPARACIÓN ENTRE “DON QUIJOTE” Y “HAMLET”. SHAKESPEARE Y CERVANTES.
