The Salon Varietés Theatre
Once upon a time on the Costa del Sol there lived a group of thespians who dreamed of staging glittering productions in their very own theatre. A leasehold on the local fleapit cinema wasn’t quite what they had in mind. Nevertheless they turned their frog into a prince among playhouses without the aid of a magic wand but a magic clarinet! The instrument in question belonged to one-time US chart-topper Acker Bilk who, in trademark bowler, goatee beard and striped waistcoat, opened the Salon´s first show all those years ago in June 1985.
For seven years the theatre was run by the seat of its pants with volunteers contributing funds and physical labour.
In 1992 the theatre became a cultural association and a board of nine was elected with the result that today every show has a budget and a beady eye is kept on balance sheets. Shakespeare and Chekhov have featured on the seasonal playbill, as well as thrillers, historical dramas and one-nighter professional acts from along the coast which help to pay the rent and give Salón feet a rest from treading the boards. Guys and Dolls and Oklahoma! are as well-attended by Costa audiences as Grease and The Rocky Horror Show. The theatre closes in July and August “because it’s just too damned hot!
