Mansfield Reds visit Monte Mentals
By Keith Nicol
WALKING FOOTBALL took another terrific stride forward with the first visit by an English team, the Mansfield Senior Reds, spending the week in Los Montesinos this week. The event was organised by the ever youthful Stan Dibble and the fun event pitted the skills of a mixed Monte Mentals squad along with participation from Daya Vieja, Playa Flamenca and Lo Crispin. Not only that, but the players from Playa Flamenca brought along their wives and girlfriends, all looking splendid in Pritty Pink, as their new WAGS fan club. The entire visit was played in good nature, with smiles everywhere, with the games played in a good spirit with the results just being a formality. Teams played two games each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with the games refereed by Bill Whitehouse and Stan Dibble
The Monte Mentals looked splendid in their new Los Montesinos kits, kindly sponsored to the tune of 200€ by local Real Estate company Re-Max. The visitors enjoyed a welcoming dinner at the restaurant Rincon Miguels on Tuesday evening with the host town and players along with the Mayor of Los Montesinos and football club president all attending and a fun BBQ at Clark’s Bar on Wednesday. After the last game on Thursday, the Mentals accompanied the Mansfield team to Torrevieja for a lunch at Tu Tu´s restaurant, an event that attracted more than seventy people, to show the visiting team their gratitude for taking part in the fun tournament.
Stan added; “We are delighted to welcome the Mansfield Senior Reds to Los Montesinos and hope that they will return again. We hope to be able to organise two visiting teams each year and for other local teams to also organise other teams to come to Spain. Manchester City Etihad Senior Walkers have confirmed they wish to bring out two teams from 8th to 13th October, with interest also being shown by Southampton, so we feel very proud to have been able to generate such interest in Walking Football as a sports tourism attraction, and hope that it continues.”
