Phoenix Host International Cricket Tournament

Alarm calls were certainly not necessary on Thursday 3rd March and the excitement in the air was palpable as the long awaited day of the inter-schools cricket tournament finally got under way. The event, organised by Neil Brook on behalf of Cricket España and hosted by Phoenix International School at CDM, Orihuela Costa, was attended by El Limonar International School, Murcia; Laude Newton College, Elche; Kings College, Murcia and Phoenix International School. This was the first time that these four schools had been brought together in a head to head sporting extravaganza of this nature and you could certainly feel the tension in the air as each school got behind their teams and cheered on their players. Students were impeccably well behaved demonstrating a true sporting attitude and showing themselves to be a credit to their schools.

Visiting students from Norlington School for Boys, who had made the trip over to the Costa Blanca, courtesy of Essex County Cricket Club, were on hand to keep score and act as umpires as the games commenced thus enhancing their own coaching and leadership skills.

It soon became apparent just how evenly matched the teams were with some outstanding cricketing skills being demonstrated by some extremely talented individuals. Spectators were treated to some truly inspirational cricket and found themselves on the edge of their seats waiting to hear the results. In the end each school had something to celebrate. Kings College Murcia won the coveted primary trophy beating Phoenix International School by only a very small margin; Kings College was also gracious in victory for the boys’ secondary team, narrowly snatching the trophy from El Limonar International School, Murcia and finally Phoenix International School were just pipped at the post by Laude Newton College who raised the trophy for the girls’ team. Every player should feel extremely proud of themselves for creating such an exciting atmosphere and for making this a day to remember.

Once all the trophies had been presented, Keith Healey, Director at Phoenix International School was proud to present a hand engraved memento to the Deputy Head of Norlington School for Boys, Paul Hobbs who was delighted to say a few words on behalf of his school.

Once all the formalities were over, students from Phoenix International School and Norlington School for Boys could not resist an impromptu friendly football match to finish off the day in style.

Acknowledgements must go to Neil Brook and Cricket España, Essex County Cricket Club, Norlington School for Boys, El Limonar Internation School, Murcia; Laude Newton College; Kings College, Murcia and Phoenix International School for making the event a huge success.
