Torrevieja Day Four
Across the road from Coys Cars is The St. James’s Gate which has been adopted by the Torrevieja Tigers Rugby Club as their home base. It was there that I caught up with about the history of Coys, which they took over twenty years ago, in 1995, along with ’s father Berni, although the business had been going for about five years prior. Back in those days, the Euro did not exist and things were all priced in Pesetas. Digging back though the record books, even when the Euro kicked in, Mike noted that it was cheaper today than it had ever been, to rent a car from Coys Rent A Car.
Over the years Mike has primarily rented Citroen, Seat and Peugeot cars and today has one of the largest stocks of cars operated by any family run car rental business in Spain. With facilities at both San Javier and Alicante airports, he even has land ready to develop when and if Corvera should become Murcia’s airport of choice. Renting a car has never been easier by using his online booking system and one can even pick up and drop off the car at different airports.

After yet another relaxing cup of café con leche or three, getting around Torrevieja is a breeze. Street Parking in Torrevieja is all free but the city has a number of paid car parks in the city centre and at the various yacht clubs and harbour areas. Except for the Easter holidays and the summer periods, you can park for free for up to an hour on the main street, Ramon Gallud, just long enough to run a few messages or have coffee with friends.
With three yacht harbours, Torrevieja is one of the largest berthing areas in the Mediterranean with ambitious plans to develop the entire harbour area and also for the building of 25 floor high rise hotels; but don’t worry Benidorm, they have only set aside land for six of them. The centre of town is slowly turning into an attractive pedestrian zone and as confidence returns, more of the empty units are being taken over and reinvented into something new.
On the outskirts of town, both Habaneras and Carrefour commercial centres attract good trade with the Alicante region’s largest shopping centre is just 10 minutes away at Zenia Blvd. On the practical side of things, the city has both one of the top public hospitals and the private Quiron Hospital, both of which have excellent reputations. The City has excellent public schools, with four private International schools within easy reach and plenty to keep all the family busy.
House prices are very competitive and to ensure you don’t run any risk of any house sale not being 100% legal, I’d point you to Eva at Marsol Internacional. She’s Spanish, speaks excellent English, knows the area extremely well and has contacts in all the right places to help you find a home within your budget. Add to that no nonsense advice and a company who have been in business 30 years, with a solid reputation behind them.
Four days in Torrevieja and we’ve just scratched the surface with what there is to do, people to see and stuff to explore, so tomorrow we’re back in the ‘Coysmobile’ and having a look around the local area.
